Ernest Morton Barker first started selling furniture outside his residence on Fitzwilliam Street in the early 1920’s.

1930's
1930's

The company was registered in 1931 and Ernest William Barker worked with his father, sister and mother to build the company up by opening a number of outlets.

1940's
1940's

During the early 1940's the company van was commandeered by the Ministry of Defence and with the Second World War it was a time of consolidation for the company.

1950's
1950's

Ernest Stuart Barker joined the company in the 1950's and helped breathe a new life into the shops.

1960's
1960's

Fashion changed rapidly and iconic brands such as GPlan were displayed in beautiful room sets showing 'Barkers' commitment to presentation and flair.

1970's
1970's

The Dodd Street ‘Upholstery & Dining Centre’ purchased in the 1970’s and the main feature was a department store size but with cleverly themed room displays.

1980's
1980's

Sheila Barker joined the company in the 1980's and helped organise and modernise the company with fresh ideas in accounting and administration.

1990's
1990's

Neil Barker joined the company in the late 1990's as the forth generation of the family to work for the company.

2000's
2000's

The 2000's have been a very progressive decade. The warehouse & bedroom centre was purchased on Burton Street in 2000 and 3 lots of building work finally culminated in the opening of the new ‘Flooring & Bedroom Centre’ in 2006.
